Default HELP PLEASE

Hi, hopefully someone with some technical knowledge will read this.

My Honda CRV 2.2 Deisel has developed a fault. Under load there is a severe drop in power. I've had AA out and they have checked for faults but nothing has been logged in the ECU and all their diagnostics check out.

It seems to drive OK for maybe 20 kilometeters OK then I get the intermittent power loss under accellaration or load. Left overnight it sees OK for a while.

I'm wondering if it might be heat releated, we drove back to our hotel last night at 3am without an problems but the air temp had dropped from 26 to 14 degrees by then.

Any thoughts ? I'm going to call the AA again today for advice.

Andy

PS. Filled up in UK on diesel and still 150km of it left. Fault developed in Loire on same tank we left UK on so don't think its a fuel issue.

Had the same with a Renault van some time ago, very intermittant. Turned out to be a loose vacume pipe, worth checking around for loose clips or splits, or collaped/restricted pipes.

It does sound boost related (i'm assuming its turbo) but we used to get a problem with a gummed up EGR valve however from memory that threw a fault) on a vec 2.0 dti

Hi Andy,

A common phenomenon with those accursed cancer engines. Here's a 'get you home' tip from the Accord gang

"Many thanks for all your suggestions, I think it was Andy fro elite emaps, he was the owner and i got it done on the back of one of the sessions that Fahad organised, but he came down to me. Great guy and certainly new his stuff. The garage say that they have changed the fuel filter as well and done any ECU updates. They do suspect the turbo as it has variable vanes but power and performance are fine when it is working. I believe they are controlled by a vacuum, but what is weird is that if you turm of the ignition switch quickly (when it has bogged down) all is well. It seems to get worse when the car is warm or in hot weather"

See here - often a reflash to cure the EGR fault:

Jilted John

Fuel filter is the cheapest place to start. But FFS take it to a Honda agent for a check, not the AA.

Checked all hoses and they seem intact. Thanks for the links Nick.

don't have much choice with the AA. They are the breakdown agent for Honda Assist. but at least they did more than the French mechanic who didn't even start the engine but just shrugged his shoulders and told me Honda would need to look at it. Unfortunately the garages in Tours and Orleans cant look at it until Wednesday.

Can you believe the AA sent a very nice man 3 hours each way yesterday to look at it.

Anyway, they have decided that rather then let me drive the AutoRoute with this problem they are going to repatriate the car to the UK dealership in the UK where hopefully the warranty will cover it. Bad news is that it could take 14 days.

Waiting for confirmation of hire car so I can get ferry back home tomorrow.

Glad I had this before I left though. god knows what I would have done without it.

Have you got holiday insurance to claim on? As Honda seem to have buggered yours up I'd want compensation for the fact it couldn't be sorted out in France.

Sounds like a VNT / actuator problem, it might just be a gunked up turbo or it may well be going into 'overboost/limp mode' and that doesn't reset until you turn the engine off and on again. I take it there's no option of giving it a sound thrashing under load to clear the muck out of it?

Blocked EGR is also an option.

Once the EGR and Turbo are cleaned out it may be fine - could also be MAP/MAf ( whichever is appropriate for the car). I'd also be inclined to check all the boost hoses as well as the intercooler connections. Do you get a chug of black smoke out of the back when it drops the power?

My guess is it needs a damned good progressive thrashing under plenty of load along with a tank or two of premium derv.

Honda have actually been great so far. Got a hire car now and CRV is on its way home. Pretty painless really, they've even given us a car from Portsmouth.
Fortunately we were at destination when it happened so just got to now get home.
Thanks for all the tips guys. I'll be asking Honda to check all that out,
