They may not be able to build road cars but they have a good reputation in motor sport. Anyone remember the last time Loeb broke down?

F1 still is a lot of privateers:
Ferrari
McLaren
Williams
Red Bull
Torro Rosso
Force India
Manufacturer teams
BMW
Renault
Toyota
Ferrari
McLaren
Williams
Red Bull
Torro Rosso
Force India
Manufacturer teams
BMW
Renault
Toyota
Ferrari and McLaren are hardly Privateers!
Fiat own Ferrari and Mercedes have a rather large share of McLaren.
Going deeper, Red Bull aren't privateers either.
TBH, the only team that i'd remotely connect to the original 'Garagiste' is Williams.
