I'm seriously considering getting rid of the S

MX5? Cute and fun but that's about it. I want a bit more excitement from my cars thanks. However, if someone, prefers pootling about at sedate speeds and doesn't like wringing the neck of a car, but wants safe, predictable fun, then the MX5 is probably a good choice.

My point was that I can wring the neck of the MX5 and still remain at sensible speeds.

And that's exactly how the Mx5 makes you feel. It's like the TR3a or TR5 that my dad had that I used to bomb about in, only the MX5 is less likely to leave you stranded at the side of the road with some weird electrical fault or drop the engine out onto the road as you drive along.
You should take a long drive out in a Mk1 MX5. Once you get past feeling a bit of a plonker and stop caring about how you look, it's very difficult to drive anywhere quickly without smiling when you get out.
When we first got this one I hated the thought of going anywhere in it because it does have that girls car reputation. After a couple of days of hooning around I stopped caring.

I have owned an MX5. It was yellow (import iirc)and an early one. Thing is, I'd rather have a classic that gives the characteristics I like than something modern and (I regard as) too cutesy. Classics can be unreliable but not if they're well maintained ime. There are other moderns that do the same thing - MR2 comes to mind, but not for me. I must be too self-conscious.
Same reason I keep my S2 though.
I would like better steering feel though. And lighter is always good.
I keep pondering an Exige/Elise and also that new Alfa (which is not quite as extreme but maybe suitable every day...)

I'm really quite pleased with the steering feel with the chassis braces & the Mugen GPs.
I've not changed anything chassis-wise since.
I sort of get the debate over the MX-5. It's now just old enough to qualify for classic car registration in Germany, in case that helps!

Or the Spoon one like david just sold on here?

PS - I keep caster moderate - I don't like the rubbery weighting too much brings.
Braces allow one to sense the breakaway far better & there's a slight NVH thing which improves steering feel.
It's no Lotus, but it gives nothing away to the NSX or Hachiroku.

Got mine back from the MX5 Restorer today, very pleased with the work and should be rust free for some years to come now.
Really missed it in the week it has been away, but managed to get sunburnt in the three hours I was out in it today!
