Default I'm seriously considering getting rid of the S

As I keep driving the MX5 these days, I'm seriously considering getting shot of the S and getting another MX5 MK1.

Her indoors won't let me keep hers but the MX5 is way more fun. You can drive it at 9/10ths everywhere and stay within the legal limits. It never feels like it's gonna bite you and when it does go you can just play with it on the ragged edge.

Parts are stupidly cheap and I've just put 4 new tyres on it (Good ones too) for under 200 sheets.

Sure the S faster in a straight line but who cares about that?

Give me some good reasons to keep the S.

Put skinnier tyres on the rear of the s and shut a piston off :-P

Hmm well although I've never driven a mk1 mx5 i understand your point, its what James May's always banging on about isnt it?
Perhaps driving pleasure is low power & skinny cheap tyres.

My argument would be that time i was following you in your mx5 'fun mobile' back to Macclesfield after a day at the garage.

I patiently waited for you to overtake the cars in front of you doing 50mph.....and waited.....and waited....then we were in macc.

Not having the oomph to overtake would kill the fun for me Gary, thats where surely you'd miss the S?

Assides from that, revving an engine to 8500-9000 is stupendous fun, and soon will be a thing of the past, enjoy it while you can

The elise is very similar to your mx5 dilemma. It doesn't have straight line grunt but feels kart like on the twisties.

i find the S like that compared to my M3

I'll change that at some point, hopefully before i lose my licence. But the noise? Can you live without a 9k rpm screamer?

This is exactly the reason I love mine.

And it was less than a grand, everything works, can even get the cricket on the radio, what's not to like? It's going in for little bit of TLC in the next few weeeks to make sure the dreaded tin worm is kept at bay, but it doesn't strictly need it at this point.

I think it's a fair argument - especially on the cost grounds, what other car would it be "normal" to pay £200 for a set of floor mats ? All I can say is that driving an MX5 still is like having sex or riding a moped - it's loads of fun but you don't want people seeing you do it

I've toyed with one as a Winter mule because of their cheapness and the fun they sound like they would be. I think a good condition mk1 has potential future classic potential as well as the majority of them rust away and find their way into the hands of people that run them into the ground. A good rwd simple car? Sounds a recipe for guaranteed classic status to me.

Err, me and anyone else still holding onto any remaining man cards Seriously though I find the engine characteristic of the S2k intoxicating, not even that It's that fast to be honest, I was only just making progress on a diesel mercedes C class the other day such is the torque that thing had, but I love the way the S2k delivers it.

Give me some good reasons to keep the S.
Rather than looking at it as an outright replacement, maybe tott up your fuel, insurance and maintenance savings you could make putting some of those miles on a cheaper car. A bit of man maths applied liberally may justify having both
