Nexus 4 / android and either Google maps or waze. Better navigation than a 1k option in an Audi.

I use NavFree and it works pretty well in the UK and know it is set up for european maps too but have no idea whether it will be as good.

I would go with forking out for the tom tom app though really as that's the best one I've seen, plus the subs for it isn't really an issue seeing as you can put it onto whatever smart phone you have at the time; a much better option than a cumbersome satnav telebox.
