Moving on - What next?
I dont think you would get anything special enough in 911 form to make it worth while.
RS4 wise you are looking at B5 cars and there seem to be some really nice ones around and you wouldn loose much if you kept it well.
For 12k you could get a really mint mk 4 R32 but they are few and far between but 20k would get you a good mk 5 R32 still in warranty.

Seems illogical - winter tyres give grip, not 4WD. 4WD only gives acceleration advantages and there isn't the GC for deep snow.
Some confsuion by the OP.

why buy a car for the slight possibility that we may have some bad weather for a few days.
Is this not an over-reaction to what was an unusual winter & in all probablity will be years before we see the likes of it again.
Surely one can manage with a bratvan-with-windows thing or something else when there is snow on the ground, and just drive with care when it's seriously wet.

OK. Thanks for this, good post!
So I am not sure what you mean by FREDs but I assume it stands for something to do with nannying safety devices.
I guess the TT felt safe and therefore not as fun. The S feels fun but not as safe.
Back to the 911, how do think that would feel in terms of the above. What I would really like I guess is a switchable system. That is not really possible I guess.
I was under the impression that the 4WD system in the Porsche only came on when needed effectively. I think the Audi one does this also but maybe there are differences between when each system thinks they are needed!
cheers

The combination of VSA & 4WD (they are linked) is what makes the car invincible.
Latest designs like teh SH-AWD can overdrive one wheel, in order to dial out under or oversteer (so long as you keep the power on) so the car needn't even handle properly in the first instance!
The latest Audi diff actually isn't electronic; it uses axial thrust to decide the F/R torque distribution, so isn't as clever as the aforementioned.
The 911 merely shifts torque forward, if it thinks you're being a bit of a twunt for the conditions. But the car has a pretty decent chassis in the first instance.

A few of points on C4S's to think about;
1 - you lose some front boot space due to the 4x4 so not a lot of boot space
2 - the cooling rads (and hose) regularly rot as crap gets wedged underneath them ( I pulled a dead dried out blackbird for a mates 997 C4S this week) If this happens your £5k will seem like peanuts!
3 -drive it hard and it will eat ALL 4 tyres - theres £1k
Clarify your budget for us.
Is it your S plus £15-20k cash or just £15-20k cash, would you put any extra finance on top?

1. I very rarely carry any passengers in my car now and don't forget that the 911 has back seats. These probably won't be much use for passengers but will be excellent for bags etc.
2. Hmm, something to think about but I am now considering a warranty which will cost me around £100/month. Not too bad considering what it could pay out.
3. True but I won't be driving it hard every day!
My budget is £25k, plus what my S will fetch minus the finance I owe on it (about £5k I think). I don't really want to get any more finance as I hate finance (only got it before as a convenient stop-gap).
Found the perfect one by the way. A black cab C4 with full GT3 body kit for £15.5k. Just hope I can sell mine now (although at that price that is not hugely urgent I guess).
cheers
