I think for that money you would certainly find a MK 5 Golf GT 2.0 TDI 140 or 170, 3 or 5 Door, or at a push a 1.4 TSI (170).
You would get an almost new Focus Zetec or Ghia 2.0 TDCI - my gf has one and averages around 48mpg, similar Astra etc.
Wouldn't bother with the A3 more money for a car that is certainly no better and in some cases (e.g. ride) worse than the Golf. Consider equivalent Seat (not that well built in my experience) or Skoda Octavia (the vRS TDI would fit the bill nicely)...
Cheers,
Corgi.

Toyota Prius. About a second adrift on your 0-60 time, but ticks all the other boxes. Not the driver's car choice, but WGAF on a daily basis as it makes the weekend toys so much more enjoyable.
My previous daily driver (for a 115 miles per day commute) was a Prius and I kick myself for not getting another - I was swayed by the siren-call of gadgets and gee gaws...
The added bonuses are fantastic reliability, low servicing costs and a very good dealer experience.
