It'll weigh in at over 1100kg and it'll cost >£50k and be bought by people who can't drive very well.
The Elise/Exige has a four, the Evora a six, the Esprit (Or whatever it's replacement is) has an eight.
Sounds good to me, so why change it?

I'd buy one
The 4 pot is going due to EU legislation. Not to say they couldn't have replaced it with a modern 2l from the Toyota range. K20A is a common choice but I don't think Honda would play ball. Maybe feeback from customers on the lack of top end grunt was behind it?

Like I said - people who can't drive.
It's not rocket science and it's a trap car manufacturers have fallen into time after time.
Lets say VW for instance.
Golf. 'We want more space!!' Golf gets bigger and Polo is introduced.
Polo. 'We want more space!!' Polo gets bigger and Lupo is introduced.
Lupo. 'We want more space!!' Lupo gets bigger and Fox is introduced.
Exige. 'We want more power!!' Shut it and buy an Evora then you muppets.
Job done and Lotus have no need to pay me any consultancy fees

You are right about the Toyota engines though. Infact, Toyota now offer a crate engine based on their 2.0l Avensis unit. Apparently 170bhp out of the box without mucking about. Plenty of potential
Ron you can't see all Exige owners can't drive, simply beacuse they can afford a 50k car. I know some good, some bad, like a lot of cars. And 50k isn't far off the top whack for a current new Exige Cup, so it will be the same owner profile.
The Evora is very different to the Exige in terms of ownership prospects, so you can't say that's a natural progression. An Evora is a Cayaman type GT car and not something most would consider as a track car alternative to the Exige. Exige is a stripped out track toy. In fact, I think the Evora has a track warranty clause like the GTR, from memory.
Plus, given the amount of money the Exige owners (good and bad
) spend on modifying their cars (mostly unsucessfully!) Lotus clearly see there is a market for more power.

Odd report; I thought there was a report that Lotus' production was falling & they were in the sh it?
Every car gets bigger at full model change; always have, always will, forever & ever, ars eholes.
At least the Exige is starting off in a favourable point and was a little too crude, so a small increase is no bad thing. It's just it goes on ad nauseam with each FMC so that you have to slot something new in at the bottom. Sounds like a Sainsbury's ad, that: Slot something new in your bottom today...
