I failed my first test weeks after my 17th birthday. Examiner was a Mr Cassidy, known locally as "No Pass Cass". Called me "sonny" throughout the test (as in "take the next left, sonny") so fair to say I had no chance. Apparently he didn't believe 17 year old boys should be allowed to drive ...

Got a cancellation a few weeks later and passed with a different examiner ...

I passed my first car test 8 weeks after my 17th birthday. Then when I was 19 I took a bike test and failed, although to be honest that was when they were using crappy radios and I couldn't hear the examiner over my power exhaust. I changed the exhaust, and took it again 2 months later and passed.

had been driving a huge range of machinery on the farm for ages and as soon as I was old enough put in for my road test as driving on the public roads was easy in comparison. FAILED! 'Too confident' apparently! This was 40 years ago, however, and the opinion of the tester was the deciding factor in those days.

BTW Too confident = cocky

On my second attempt.

My mother was dating at the time and a guy came round to dinner the evening before my second test. Turns out he was an examiner at the test centre I was due to be at the next morning....
I was told that I hadn't seen him !

Passed next day , thankfully with a different examiner and the one I'd met the day before became my stepfather....and still is 25 years later
