Number plate retention issues
Need some advice!
I'm going to be selling my car tomorrow and it has a private plate on. I didn't have time to put the plate on retention before the sale. My question is this, if I sell the car with my plate attatched, can the new owner then hand the plate back over to me (obviously he agrees to this)?
The reason i query this is that on the DVLA website it states that the 'nominee (that would be me after the sale) has no rights to the plate' meaning that although it would be on my new car I would have no rights to it.
All very confusing. Surely you must be able to transfer a plate because how else could you sell a plate on?
Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

If In recall, to transfer a plate, it must be on retention, or, be transferred from vehicles both of which are in the same name.? I haven't done this for a while since changing jobs, so a we bit rusty on the subject. (FFs, Just realised the last one I did was only two months ago, old age eh.) Sorry.
You can, but it is messy. I sold a car with my cherished number, in a private sale. We agreed the plate was not part of the sale and I deducted the cost of the plate transfer from the sale. He agreed to do the paperwork and send me the retention certificate when it came through, about a month or so later. However, the new certificate will have him as the 'owner' of the number if you like, and you as the 'nominee', which allows you to assign the number to your car if it's registered in your name. You will have to get the retainer to sign the form to get the plate assigned to your new car. So don't date it. Once the plate goes on to your new car, as the registered keeper of the car, should you then wish to retain the plate once more, the paperwork will all make sense again with you being the 'owner' of the cherished plate.
If the purchaser is not willing to do this, then get the plate taken off, before the sale. I did this recently, went to the local DVLA office, which speeded it up somewhat and got all the paperwork- new V5, MOT, tax disc etc. in less than 2 weeks. If you do decide to go this route, and sell thae car with an exchange of the cash, don't let the car go until you get the new V5 signed and returned with the new keepers details. Because until the DVLA receive the form as you will still be liable for any incident involving the car, even if it has technically been sold.
