Default old racing crash

can you tell i'm bored

been looking some old race footage and came across this one . and the more i watch it the more i'm convinced it looks like a bomb

i know it's mad but the car dosn't seem to touch anything, he's on the racing line and it just explodes!!! it may be just me but watch and see


dont watch if you are easily up set

crash!!!!!!!?????

The movie seems to jump so seeing exactly what happened is difficult.
The old chicane that he was going through was just like an opening in a wall.
So if you got it wrong you went head on into the end of the wall.

Which I think is what happened.

Remember the fuel tanks on those cars were above the drivers knees and either side of the driver, and no bag tanks. So if he clipped the wall the first thing that would happen would have been the tank to rupture and explode.

Sad but a fact of racing in that era.

Yes the clip doesn't really show you what happened, just the immediately before and the immediately after. His rear nearside wheel clips the guard rail and he then hits what is described as a light pole before overturning the car beneath straw bales. Apparently the fire only started when the marshals were trying to get the car upright. He suffered 3rd degree burns on 70% of his body and died 3 days later.
