Default Parking charge puzzle

I read this sign several times over, and I still couldn't figure out how much I should pay. In the end a homeless woman explained it to me. And she was right too, as evidenced by the leaving time printed on the ticket. And it wasn't the value I thought it was.

I was parking from 7pm ish to 9pm ish. Now clearly 1-2 hours is £1.50, but those rates only apply from 8am to 8pm, and from 8pm to 8am it's a fixed fee of £1. So does that mean I have to pay £2: £1 for 7-8 and a further £1 from 8 to 9, making it more expensive than just buying two hours during the daytime?

But it says at the bottom "Evening and daytime tarrifs can be combined. See seperate instructions", although quite where the seperate instructions are I've no idea. So that suggest I do pay £1.50, and it's "combined" with the evening rate.

Or perhaps as the £1 day rate is 0-1 hour, that doesn't include the full hour, so wouldn't get me as far as 8pm, only 7:59pm. Which means I have to pay £2.50; £1.50 for 7-8pm to get me into the night rate, and then the further £1 for 8-9pm.

So, what does the congregation think?

You'll notice at the bottom it says "These machines do not give change. Coins may be inserted to a higher value than required to obtain a ticket. No refund will be given". I.e. it's in Oxford City Council's interests to have people confused and overpaying for parking. And if you underpay they charge you £100.

Definitely £1.50 as this is the premium rate that you are paying outside of premium hours.

That confusion is typical of the legalised fraud perpetrated by the local-gov't zombies. I therefore usually don't bother to pay - f uck 'em.

There's a piece of road in Hertford, where the yellow line was oversurfaced about four years ago. There's a tiny restriction sign on the pub wall. Every time I see the parking Nazi hovering for his next commission, I get the urge to paint the pub wall with the little c unt. It's fraud, pure & simple.

for the sake of 50p, i'd put £2 in. Or £1.50 and argue your case if you got a fine, but for the effort, I would just pay the £2...

So what did the homeless woman say?

I'll post the answer later.

The machine is no help. All you do is enter your registration, enter your money and press a button. So if you overpay, nothing tells you that you've overpaid - a nice earner for the council. OTOH, if you underpay, you get a ticket with a return time sooner than you expect, which means you're screwed and either have to return sooner, or buy a whole new ticket. And that's if you notice, which some people might not, and risk the £100 fine.

I know, they charge in 11p units & the machine only takes 20p pieces & thus gives no change.

Bunco booth bastards.

Its a pound... the sign means that after 8pm you pay 1 pound for any amount of time between 8pm and 8am.... simple

Can't believe you guys can't see that............... buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut it is badly worded...

Here in aberdeen there is something similar that is "after 6pm its £1 until 7am" or something like that. So if you arrive at 550 (its a pound an hour) you pay 2 pounds if you stay until 9pm.

geddit?!
