"His plea of not guilty to one count of aggravated vehicle-taking was accepted by the Crown Prosecution Service."

The guy should have had both eyes poked out. So should the far kking jury!

The 172mph is sooooooo irrelevant here. Well, it is any way, other than as an excuse for cheap journos to knock one out.

It's just everything in this knutry is soo mis-reported, you have to be awake to spot the truth. Another meeja distraction burglary.

ABS means it can actually take longer to stop than a car without ABS.
I know what you are trying to say but I'm struggling to think of any road surface where this would be true.

Maybe a VERY sticky surface ???

Especially with modern ABS that is down to each individual wheel.

And the 997 turbo with ceramic brakes and all the stability electronics would make those kind of speeds easy to drive. The car is rated for over 200mph, so he was only at 85% ..

Ahha... apparently
"In gravel and deep snow, ABS tends to increase braking distances. On these surfaces, locked wheels dig in and stop the vehicle more quickly. ABS prevents this from occurring"
ok.

but...
"On high-traction surfaces such as bitumen, or concrete many (though not all) ABS-equipped cars are able to attain braking distances better (i.e. shorter) than those that would be easily possible without the benefit of ABS. Even an alert, skilled driver without ABS would find it difficult, even through the use of techniques like threshold braking, to match or improve on the performance of a typical driver with an ABS-equipped vehicle, in realworld conditions"

Sorry ... OT.

silly because he lost his livelyhood as well.

as for the reporting standards at the beeb, no surprises there - this kind of sensationalistic clap trap is nothing new and becoming more and more common

there are many hobbies that the beeb deem socially unacceptable and they will do anything to demonise them regardless of the facts

- not at all Fletch. You'd need to be a damn great driver and have 4 brake pedals and four right feet to be able to out perform a modern ABS on the roads.

Hmm! Told not to take the car by his boss. Still takes car.

Invalidates any insurance.

Think, if he hit someone then then what?

Utter twat! Doesn't look like he could control his own bladder let alone a car at +170mph. Deserves what he got.

I have seen race drivers out perform ABS by using threshold braking etc. but as for your average Joe ? He's gonna panic, the wheels are gonna lock up, and he's gonna slide for miles. Just like in the road safty ads.

ABS has saved thousands of shunts I imagne.
It's saved me before now, I can tell ya.

The driver's reactions or abilities are not the only issues here. It's those of other motorists or pedestrians.

I remember years ago a friend took me for a spin in his Diablo. We sprinted down this suburban wide single (ex dual) carriageway, round the roundabout, and set off back the way we'd come.

There was a side road about 300yds from the roundabout, with an old lady in a Civic () waiting to pull out. Whilst she would have had a clear view of us exiting the roundabout, she simply was'nt expecting the Diablo to be accelerating as quickly as we were and so needless to say, she pulled out. My friend thankfully read the situation in plenty of time and we put the anchors on and I doubt she even knew what had happened.

The point is that in the presence of a car doing 170+mph, it's other peoples reactions that are likely to be suspect. As the speeding driver should be aware of this, he becomes a knob for driving at speed on a road with junctions, other vehicles or pedestrians ...
