The less scrupulous would buy a simillar car that's worthy of an MOT, temporarily swap ID's. Get the plate, and then flog the car. Iguess the DVLA must be up on this kind of thing.

I had a Riley 1.5 once that I inherited. I wanted the plate and did a deal for someone else to basically rebuild it. The thing fell through, so the car ended up being fit for scrap.

Now when I check on the DVLA website, the plate is attached to an Astra!

I have a feeling some ID swapping went on to get the plate "off" the car.
