Why are some folk suggesting that Rossi/Edwards will retire?

Bloody Hell!

On holiday at the mo so missed the race. That's tragic. I had him pegged as the next motogp star!

A fantastic rider to watch. That's really awful news.

It wouldn't surprise me if Rossi decided to call it a day.

Although the accident was unavoidable, it must play on your mind when you get caught up in an incident that ends the life of a close friend.

Rossi posted the following on his Twitter:
Il Sic per me era come un fratello minore tanto duro in pista come dolce nella vita. Ancora non posso crederci, mi manchera' un sacco
Marco was like a younger brother to me as tough on track as he was gentle in life. I still can't believe it, I will miss him loads.

There is no way of knowing how something like this will effect someone. It might spur Rossi on to win another title and dedicate it to Marco

Markko Martin stopped driving WRC when he killed his co-driver Michael Park in a collision with a tree.

I wouldn't be suprised if these guys called it a day. Although (as a non-biker myself) it seems to me that the biker mentality does seem to cope with death better than those in cars. Especially when fatalities are almost expected at the TT every year.

As Rossi rode back to the pits you could see he was visibly shaken. I saw a clip of the accident on the web and didn't want to see it again. When I saw the helmet rolling across the track, I feared for one awful moment that it may still have something inside it.

Very sad and Sideshow Bob was the type of character that all sports need ...

Tragic. The video of the accident was utterly harrowing.

I've read that Simoncelli wore a helmet one size 'larger' to accommodate his distinctive hair; if this is true, it's very likely this was the cause of it coming off.

Who knows if he would have survived the incident had his helmet not come off, but he'd have had a much better chance I'd guess.

Footage of it is even on the mainstream news sites.

I've seen lots of 'ordinary' people killed on TV

This was very sad (like Sheldon) but I see no reason why his death (and the reaction to it of his friends and relatives) should be treated any differently to that of say, a starving African

RIP
