I got a rare treat at Snetterton last weekend though, there was someone in an AM V8 absolutely on the limit everywhere, I bet his next service won't be cheap
Always good to see!

There was a guy at Spa last year giving it 2 full days of flat out abuse in an F430... good lad.

I bet Simon had just as much fun getting his times as I did mine.

There's a very real tendency for owners of mega powerful cars to blast up the straights and then pootle round the corners on trackdays.

Nothing wrong that at all until they start holding up slower cars that are quicker through the corners but can't get past on the straights.

I started off with a low powered Caterham so I didn't get blown away by the acceleration and drawn into bad habits.

Whether it made any difference in the long run I don't know but that's the way I played it.

That's very true!

I sometimes cannot believe how well my slightly improved S2000 is set up for corners - until one of those Caterfield Ninjablade things pisses all over it.

Had a great chase with a racing e-type once - that seemed an awful lot of fun.

I agree ive seen plenty of that, but the point i was making was about upgrading the S. No different to what you did in the Caterham. If you've been tracking your S for a while then make it more powerful it doesnt mean your going to loose the ability to drive it in a corner.

Actually, that would be an interesting comparo!

Assuming it was supercharged, depending on the mass of the blower and the smoothness/spontenaiety of delivery, would it make the CAR slightly worse through the corner? Obviously, it would be faster OUT of the corner (traction permitting or 255 tyres permitting) and along the straight.

You'd really need to time the same driver in the same car before/after to verify the change.

The enjoyment factor would be hard to quantify scientifically of course; it's entirely subjective.

MarkB's suggestion made me smile as the Europa crossed my mind when last week I was considering a car change. I see Thorney do a nice stage 2 upgrade for £2,500 which makes a nice performance improvement.

What would be interesting is comparing a S2000 with say 4k's worth of supercharger kit on to another S2000 with 4k's worth of handling and braking kit on.

I can imagine the extra cornering speed would overcome the extra straight line speed on most tracks?

I thought that sounded nuts, until I realised 4K doesn't actually buy one THAT much handling & brake stuff!

I think the fact remains that for around 8K, one can build a car that is in many respects, unbeatable for the price!

Spending 4k with a proper instructor would probably give the best results...

lose. Grrrr.

I'm not sure about that. If you arrive at every corner faster it's going to change the way you deal with the corner. The braking is going to be more significant, and you'll probably be inclined to take a different line to maximize the braking rather than the corner entry. Also the power is going to be more significant, so again you'll take a slower line in the corner to get on the power earlier, which makes more of a difference the more power you have. Point and squirt. You probably gain more by not taking the corner as fast. But the 100bhp Caterfield driver will risk life and limb trying to keep the momentum he's spent the last 5 minutes trying to build up.

It also means what was a flat out kink could now become a corner you need to think about, brake, change gear, apply the throttle, etc.. At The Ring you might have an extra 20 corners per lap.

But I think a supercharged S would be faster almost anywhere, just not more fun, especially if the brakes were fading by the second lap.
