I will reply better in a bit but dont bother with a PPP if you plan to remap later - the Ecutek is effectively the same as that, plus more so you dont want to pay for it twice!

The standard bugeye WRX is slow but the STI is not! I had a run against a UK STI in the S2000 and was very fractionally faster from 60mph up (remember my S2000 was not standard). An STI PPP with 300bhp would be lovely - or you could get a standard STI and make some simple mods to achieve the same/better result for less money (exhaust, remap, hey-presto)

All I'd say is that IMHO all UK WRX's are a poor reflection of the Subaru ethos. The classics were quick and exciting and the STI's are quick and exciting but bog standard 215bhp WRX's with circa 1400kg, a nose like a brick and 4wd losses are slow, boring and not particularly fun. A bit of a sell out by subaru to attract city boys IMHO.

Well looking into it further there isn't a sport wagon STI only a WRX.

The ideal option for me would be a WRX with a ecutek remap and a new exhaust. This should release similar power to the STI (power station quote 280) but without the damping changes, active central dif and 6 speed box?

That said sounds a lot like a PPP which maty be easier in the long run on insurance and resale.

Or do we really need to be looking at an STI for the full scooby experience?

I am tempted to join scoobynet but I am slightly scared especially after having read some of the muppet show sub forum!

Stay well clear of muppet show!!! Use search on SN first - WRX vs STI will have been debated over and over. PPP is better for resale and warranty but you pay up front for it. If you mod to get the full 280bhp out of it then a blobeye WRX wagon would make a quick, fun and reasonably comfortable estate car. 0-100mph (with a launch) in around 13.5-14s isn't too shabby at all and you have 4WD nothing like the aggressive looks of the classic and a big boot

When modded there is probably less need for a 6-speed box. My classic has 300bhp and I can't imagine what 6 gears would be like. I'd have to change the first 3 sooo fast!

What sort of modding we talking about and would I get more out of the next version?

Active diff only came in in 2005 for the UK STi (2003 for the JDM)

Only worth it if you are hardcore

Mapping a WRX to 280 should keep you happy. If you want to go further you are then limited. An STi can be taken to 350 if its a JDM and about 20 bhp less on a UK.

I personally wouldnt have anything less than an STi with a remap now, but if you havent had one before, a mapped WRX will feel quick.

Kenny - I got 360 bhp and the 6 speed works fine They dont pack all the lower gears that far together that you cant change quick enough

Any benefits of bug vs blob in tuning a WRX?

Pass, don't really know my newage stuff. I'd imagine not a great deal - I think the blob came with 10bhp more standard though (or is that the new hawkeye)!

You can pretty much get the same bhp.

Bug will be tricky to shift on though.
