SPECS - Has anyone here actually ever been caught
Hopefully not. I went through the permanent one on the A43 near Northampton yesterday. For once the digital dash on the S is comes in handy: you creep up to 51 so then you do 49 for a bit to balance it out.
Understandable that they have that as clearly 51 mph on a nearly empty dual carrigway on Sunday morning is extremely dangerous.

I've never been caught speeding with these, I rarely go on motorways with the S anyway.
The times I've happened upon these I've been in my van which has cruise control, I set my speed to 55 leptons read from the speedo, which equates to approx. 51 mph actual; as indicated by my GPS. This gives the advantage of overtaking the overcautious who are obviously doing 45 mph according to their speedo, probably 43 in actuality.
I have no reason to doubt the GPS as being accurate when measuring constant speed, though it isn't as accurate reproducing acceleration. The inconsistencies between the GPS and vehicle(s) speedos I've compared it with, correlate quite well with the speedo discepancy margins that are claimed by vehicle manufacturers (I knew I should've bookmarked that site!).
In theory you could get away with, in a 50 zone; the margin of your speedo = ~3 mph, and the 10% + 1 mph they are said to apply to speed cameras (stuck for a reference again
) = 59 mph. Hopefully someone will clarify this a little further...

You'll know where the permanent ones are near me AE, and I haven't heard of a single person who'se been done for speeding in them. Neither has anyone at work, and there's a lot of people at my place.
