It's government.

It involves IT bloodsuckers.

It will COST £7 billion initially.

Ongoing maintenance will cost an additional £7 million per annum.

Probably.

Going to be some very happy TAXI firms

My first thought was some one will find an "angle" on it
Why the hell don't they just put it on fuel! (cost me more though )
Less admin
Everyone will have to pay it
It will be proportional to your mileage and mpg and emissions
I'm sure that's too obvious and too simple though

This is a visual symbol of how we are moving government into the modern age

I think he means how we finally follow other countries that have been doing this for over 30 years...

A colleague of my late father used to do this aeons ago; he ran two identical SS Jaguars and switched plates between the cars.

Not sure why...
And really, why not? He can't drive both cars atthe same time so why should he pay more VED because he splits his annual mileage between two cars?

Which brings me onto my frustration - why I pay the same VED as someone who does triple my annual mileage? Why not scrap VED and put an extra penny on fuel duty?

They wouldn't make very much from me .... 3 cars, 2 bikes. 2 of the cars do less than 5k miles a year the other 3 vehicles do less than 1k miles.

Would save me a small fortune.

Because then drivers of slow or economical cars would get to pay less, whilst causing just as much congestion.

The amount of fuel duty and VAT I pay every month is about the same as a year's VED, so I never quite understood why people moan so much about road tax.

No point in taxing twice a year or by direct debit... costs you at least 10% and potentially 5% respectively......

I tax all my fleet for 12 months, if I decide to take it off the road for the winter then I get a refund...at the FULL rate !

Make the bar stewards work for it and don't pay them anything more than you have to.

Actually, it was a £20m saving for Govt.

IT systems are already up and running, hence the relatively short time frame for implementing it.
