It's risen above inflation due to measures take by government to intentionally raise it above inflation as a deterrant against pollution. This was brought in by the Tory government.

Also, just incase some of the mathematically ignorant say it's risen at 2.4 times the rate of inflation, it hasn't. It's slightly less than double and probably even closer to the RPI.

Quite plausibly, wasn't that smug knut Lawson, was it? Not in '95, I don't think.

IIRC oil prices were falling at that time and the reduction in VAT must've stung.

Not just plausable, this is what happened. It was set to rise 3% above inflation and then move to 6%

Yes it is VAT on everything, but if you add VAT to 116p you get 136.3p This is clearly NOT correct.

If 116p a litre is the pump price, then the VAT is 7/47 of that.

The 17.5% is calculated on the net price, ie the 98p.

That's because the 116 includes the VAT unless I'm missing something (like I said before?)
