My colleague in work has an E46 M3 he said taking it easy he can get 26mpg which I think is ok for the engine size and performance....saying that If I take it easy in the S I can get 300 miles to 40 litres of fuel which is 34.1 mpg ....thats not all motorway either and with a few VTEC blasts per trip.....im really impressed with the Fuel economy of my S didn't expect it to be so good...........worst I have had was 29mpg when I first bought it showing everyone what it could do taking everyone out for blasts lol.
I also have a BMW e46 330d Touring Mapped to 245bhp 500nm torque and that only manages an average of 33mpg id say it was on a par with the S economy wise...
I thought my previous car would knock spots off the S for fuel economy I had a heavily tuned Golf GT TDI PD 150 running 220bhp 502nm torque and that was doing on average 38mpg so only 4mpg better than the S!! apart from the high insurance the S is a cheap car to run and maintain

Some peeps must have had different S's to me... I never managed over 30mpg - my average over 5 years was 23mpg and my best ever drive got me 300 miles from a tank but it was the dullest driver EVER.

I averaged 200 miles from a tank, which is about the same as I am averaging in my 135i.

Managed an easy 27mpg over 700 miles, mainly motorway at 90 average when it had only 500-1200 miles on the clock.
