Default Tool set?

I need to buy a good (not overly expensive) tool set, it needs to give me most of the tools I will need to do various bits and pieces on the car it needs to be in single case, dare I ask, do Halfords do anything suitable? For example the socket set might need to include an extension, or a ratchet style spanner etc. Anything you can think of that might be suitable for a mechanical n00b like me, thanks for any help.

Can confirm. Some young lads at work have them.

Though I would be embarrassed to hold one.

Russ.
