Besides, i'm not saying they aren't good. Lets face it, they are probably the best.

Snap-On are expensive for a reason as someone said above - you will generally not find better tools and they are almost bomb proof, but you pay a lot for that.
The Halfords stuff is streets ahead of most of the kit available at a comparable price and more importantly, it is guaranteed and you are never more than a stone's throw from an outlet to go replace broken tools.
My philosophy is that money spent on good tools is never wasted, as it will pay dividends in time. For what the average home mechanic is after, the kit on the link above is probably the best vfm. I use this kit on my 22 yr old land rover and have no problems.
Agree with Hyper though - mole grips, a 4lb club hammer and a seloection of punches and drifts
oh, and a 36" breaker bar (HP of course)

I have a selection of Facom, Snap-On, bluepoint and Britool.
Of all I prefer Britool for feel, and they are the oldest of the bunch.
Kamasa always used to be a lifetime warantee from the local mobile seller too and resonable for the 'rough jobs'.
Just buy the dear stuff in what you tend to break, like thin wall deep reach sockets.

Some of the halfords tools do break. But buy that halfords kit and replace anything you do break with good quality stuff and you'll have saved yourself a good bit of money.
take them back to the shop and they replace for free!!
