Total ban on drinking and driving.

My understanding is that Police drivers will soon be subject to this as well - but only for disclipline .... which would still mean you would be sacked if over it. I wonder how Pilots, etc manage at the moment - I presume they just can't drink the day before they work ?
If I'm in work for a 6.30 am start the most I'd have the night before is 1 pint and that would be no later than 7-8 pm, although I very rarely drink at all before working an early morning.
We get paid a hell of a lot to do what is a very responsible job in ATC, it'd be stupid to throw this away over a few pints before a morning shift. And it's not just losing your job either, the maximum penalty is a 10k fine and 2 years in jail.

A zero tolerance approach to drink driving would not have stopped this tragic incident.
The guy already demonstrated his lack of respect for the law by drinking twice the legal limit so what's to say he would have complied with a no drink drive law ? Nothing.
I have every sympathy for the parents, but they are in no position to give any rational recommendation.

It would not have changed a thing. He knew he was breaking the law anyway.
And how are the police going to enforce a zero tolerance policy when they don't have enough cars on patrol to deal with the current laws anyway?
To some people it could be quite important as their own safety net irespective of the police.
I'm sure we've all heard or had the conversation.
"Not for me, I'm driving"
"Go on, you can have 1, 2 etc"
It will help those people who are not as strong willed or are more easily influenced.

The limit should be raised back to the old level, where 2-3 pints was OK for a big bloke.
There's too many people got into trouble the morning after when they felt fine or through using alcohol-based mouthwash.
Lowering it to zero is gonna do jack shit for the hardened D/D driver and merely catch the (almost) sensible (as always).
Might as well lower the speed limit to zero because of that fatal plod car crash.
Unfortunately, most people are too stupid and are easily tricked by argumentative fallacies such as 'zero-tolerance' and it wins votes.
What I'd like to see is zero-tolerance on argumantative fallacies, which should sort things out!

as i said before takes all the guesswork away.
also this is just a high profile case.we dont hear about the dd deaths cased by non footballers ,celebs, etc.
So we dumb down yet again just because a few inconsiderate tossers spoil it for the rest of us with their lack of discipline. As Nick says the effort/cash would be better spent elsewhere, but that wouldn't be PC would it, far too bloody common sense by far.
The world has gone fecking mad.

The weak willed are always going to be weak willed. We shouldn't have to penalise the majority for the failings of the minority.

I feel a bit of sympathy for this footballist. We've all done stupid things, but fortunately 99.9% of the time there aren't such terrible consequences.
The father will be scarred for life. If it were my kids - I would be there to meet him on his release and introduce him to the rest of his penalty.
Its not like he even tried to hide it by ambling home.....
We're all responsibile for our own actions, whether we believe it or not.
