Default Turning left at roundabouts

I have seen this so many times but never sure if its illegal.

Approaching a roundabout on a dual carriageway. At roundabout I can turn left, right or go straight on - all onto more stretches of dual carriageway. A lot of drivers are in the right hand lane as they approach the roundabout and then turn off left into the right lane of the next stretch of road. I see so many people do this, especially when there is a longer queue in the left lane than the right lane. Yes it may save time but it looks dangerous to me so if its not illegal i would certainly consider it bad driving. What would happen of the next car in the left lane decided to go straight on ?

I see this happening a lot more than it used to...but then I get the impression all road courtesy went out the window many years ago.

I don't cut lane like this when I see traffic on the left lane, I have a faster way. I normally turn right, go around the roundabout all around and go to the left turn that I needed to go to. Cut all the traffic and no one will ever notice you just jump the big queue.

What's more dangerous is when people in the left lane decide they want to go around the roundabout for the 3rd or 4th exit and the people in the right lane are going straight on at the 2nd or around to the 3rd or 4th.

Muppets and a load of people not driving defensively.

It's a lot safer than going left in the right lane, even going straight on in the right lane can be tricky as some idiots who are in the left lane just keep going past the exits to turn right... they have no clue what lane to be in just like 99% of people here in the UK, whether it's motorways or wherever else they just can't seem to understand how it works!

Edit UF beat me to it

I suspect your approach is a lot less dangerous DM.

I even saw several people yesterday turn right at a roundabout by approaching in the left lane...even worse

Sorry about the double post. the forum does this to me sometimes. I'm sure the mods will be along soon to sort it out.

Mine is not dangerous at all, you can turn right on the roundabout and you can go around as many time as you wish and get off at any junction you like when you indicate left I am not doing anything illegal here and also not really jumping the queue as I have my right to do so. People is just silly how they stick to the rules and don't use their brain when you see 1 mile long queue and they will actually queue up and wait for it to turn left.

Whilst that is not dangerous, it's completely retarded. You might be alright, but you are significantly contributing to the problem.

It's why the queue in the left hand lane is so big

If drivers physically cannot turn left, because of people going round the roundabout, then of course the traffic will build up!!!

You may see it as a 'right', but that is just to justify the stupidity of your actions Dixon

If drivers stuck to the correct lane, then the queue would never get as big.

We can't police this idiotic behaviour, or change the layout of the roads...we just have to put up with the morons on the roads

There is a roundabout like this near me, and it grips my sh1t to see the tools in the RH lane, 98% of whom are turning left after a quick trip round.

It's completely ambiguous dependent on design & the highway code is NFU as usual. Thus accidents are invariably 50/50.

I've been there with only one (DC) exit & got some old biddy in the passenger door. Like there was only 1 exit & she still wanted to go all round, for some reason. From the LH lane, of course. I was ahead, so she cannot even have stopped at the roundabout in order to catch me up.

The only safe answer is Dixon's. Or a Unimog.

With that admission I suggest a change of name from 'Dixon' to 'Dixhead'.

Ok I am sorry if I offended you so much from my disgusting anti social behaviour, I shouldn't even allow to drive on the road.

I come from a country that you have to fight for your lane and use your brain to drive on the road as if you queue up, you could be sitting there for a few hours and no one will let you move.
