I do the same thing as Dixon, why sit there like a mong in the left lane if the right is free you can do a quick lap of the roundabout and take your exit.

I will hold my hands up and say that I too have done this at a roundabout but if it's any consolation I got confused and took the wrong turning thus causing me further delay

With regards to the merging, I'm seeing a lot more road signs saying merge in turn and use both lanes therefore cutting down the excessive build up of traffic in the continuing lane.

And that's because it is precisely the correct and recommended approach.

if there is space todo so, why not?
if your pushing in when there is no gap, then thats another thing all together.

for example, we have a faster car than most, why should we be held up by a 1litre micra driver who uses 1/4 throttle when pulling out, when we can safely use our power to get in front into a clear spot?

i see it as a similar thing as when a junction splits into an extra lane as you join the roundabout. if people arent using that extra lane, why not aslong as you obey the signs/markings? ok, you've likely 'jumped' a number of cars, but the lane is there to be used. if no car is occupying that road, why not make use of it?

besides, it's ecofriendly - your sat in traffic less, so less idle emmisions

Assuming it's not the UK you should remember the adage - when in Rome do as the Romans do.

Just because they behave like chavs over there doesn't mean that you have to behave like one here.

So when foreigners drive in the UK they should forget about all lane discipline, completely ignore all other drivers around you and drive around like an intolerant clueless retard?

The standard of driving is apalling here in the UK, and this topic is just making me laugh. People get all worked up about doing the right thing and everbody knows best, where as when you look outside there's nobody that knows how to drive properly and everbody gets in eachothers way...

As someone who travels the world extensively, the standard of driving in the UK is very good. You don't even have to go very far to start fearing for your life, Spain and France spring to mind immediately. Then you think that is bad, go to Cape Town...then you think it can't get much worse, go to Asia. OH MY GOD. There are no rules and everyone does their own thing.

So all in all, bar Australia and Canada, the UK has some of the best driving IMO and most people are pretty tolerant. Yeh roundabouts are pain in the ass, but meh, people are idiots just let 'em get on!

I agree with you on the other countries being a lot worse, but when you compare the UK to the Netherlands (where I'm from) or Germany or Scandinavia and all of a sudden UK standards are not so good...

Do a 4h motorway journey there and you'll get there smoothly and relaxed... do it here you get all worked up because you've just spent 4h between a lot of morons that cut you off or are in your way and in the wrong lane.

cant say i've ever experienced any of that winfreak.
i havent driven on the continent (only passenger many years ago), but my experience of UK motorways isnt as you describe. must be a southern/m25 thing

the only 'bad' driving i see is those middle lane hoggers, but theyre more of a pest than anything else. a quick flash of your lights usually gets them out of the way.

They're the biggest problem of the whole motorway not flowing properly, once you've driven on the continent you'll notice that if people were just to merge back all the time it flows so much better, you wouldn't have to wait or move lane to overtake someone because he'll move back after he's done his move.

Now here you keep having to move into the fast lane where people won't let you in or are constantly braking because they're too close up to the one in front, causing traffic jams while the middle lane is half empty, and the slow lane is completely empty bar a few lorries.... it just doesn't work!

I guess it's all what you're used to though, to you this is normal and you don't know any better, you don't see much wrong and it's the standard.

I've been driving for years somewhere where it does work and all of a sudden come here to this chaos and to be honest I hate driving on the motorways now

Yeh but motorway driving in France consists of people in the inside lane pulling out and hoping for the best! But yeh, Germany is amazing for courteous driving.

But even so, UK roads are the safest in Europe, surprising giving they are also the most congested.
