Ultima
i've been in a few and they are as mad as you would think.
i love the combination of the looks and the V8 lump in them.
I know a couple of owners including the red one that was on burnies new years drive so if you want to PM me i can put you in touch with them.
also as an aside there'll be the opportunity to ride in one on track on May 16th

I've never driven one, but I'd love a go. They look brilliant.
I've seen lots at track days, but they never go very fast on the track (I dont know why this is , as they are undoubtably quick, maybe the owners cant drive well enough?), and always seem to break down.
I think if you get one, you've got to get a high power version ~600hp. no point in doing something by halves.
I cant imagine them being any good on the road though, I'd imagine they are harsh , uncomfortable, noisy, probably the worst car to choose for a continental blast. But thats just my perception, maybe they'd be quite good

It's rare for a good track car to be a good road car and vice versa.
That IS nauseatingly fast though!

Stunning car, but suprised at the choice... only know you from your posts Pete, but it does not strike me as your kind of car.
If you do get one.... can I have a ride please!?!

Brand new mainstream cars don't interest me for lots of reasons - from the fact that they are common, to the laughable depreciation
I can't replace the M5 for what I regard as reasonable expenditure for better performance
Italian exotica remain on the agenda but only subsequent to a house move and one or two other reshuffles
In the short term I would be happy to drive a beater if the garage contained something special
The garage is not a great place to store Italian steel at the moment, carcoons etc nothwithstanding
If I can get it on the IOW ferry you might get a go

Pete, my concern would be that the Ultima would be hard work over long distances, particularly in a hot climate. It looks like it would be a hot car to drive in. However, this is mere guesswork on my part but it certainly something I would investigate if I were thinking of using it for anything else other than a weekend bit of fun.
but since I'm only really interested in
a) the CanAm
b) a car with air con and
c) continuous runs of no more than 100 miles (I don't see the point of driving for more than one hour without stopping when I'm on holiday)
I really can't see it being an issue

The guy who I know built 2, a GTR and a CanAm, his GTR site is http://www.ultima-gtr.info/ and has a lot of useful information - he's a decent guy, I raced with him for a couple of seasons and we still have mutual friends through racing, so I could put you in touch if you wanted more information (and an unbiased opinion on ownership).
yes, I will talk to him in due course
no rush at the moment - we have a bungalow to do up
Having accompanied a couple of these on the Wishes for Kids event at Donnington last year, I can confirm that of 3 there on the day, one died with electrical failure, one overheated quite badly and the third made it through the day ok. 2 were on Porsche transaxles and one on a hewland unit, as fitted to the Lotus 23 of old.
Insanely fast and cornering on rails were the thoughts that spring to mind! that said, one guy did have a moment and was glad of the extensive run-off area.

a relative has an unltima GTR.
its never had a problem (he built it himself) to this day and he must have had it for a good 5+ years now.
only thing he complains about is the fuel economy and price of tyres, but once you get strapped in to the 6 point harness and fire the engine that all goes away.
0-100 is insane in these cars. also the deceleration is utterly amazing.
im pretty sure the ultima holds the world record for 0 - 100 - 0 mph in soomething like 8.6 seconds
