Used car checks?

Ok well I used my noggin and tracked down where this car was last bought and serviced - turned out it was bought locally and service there since - the guy on the phone told me everything about its history - what had been done and what hadnt - free but very valuable info.
Turns out the cambelt is overdue and a service is really needed - other than that the car appears to be well looked after and has had good sums of money spent as and when needed.
I will more than likely do the data check as this will confirm if finance is owed(I doubt it but not impossible as it came from a stealer)
I wont do an AA style check - Im going to get the guy to service it and cambelt change - that way its in the dealers and I know its ok if its been through there.
