What is/was/will your next car be?

For a conertible Ireplacement I keep looking at Maserati Spiders. A Ferrari engine for a lot less! I'd buy a ferrari if I could afford it.
You say you cant affort to purchase a Ferrari.
I would therefore wager that you cannot afford to run a Maserati Spider.
With most exotica, the purchase price of the car is only half of the story.
I've had my V8 Vantage for just over six weeks now, and it still is an absolute occasion to get in and drive something that I expect to be the case for a long time to come.
I'll probably run it for 2010 and might change it towards the end of the year, depending on a) how the businesses are going and b) what else is around that might take my fancy at that time.
The only drawback is I now have two cars that only tend to get about 15mpg each if I'm lucky

If you get the 4WD one and if you get one that's been modified to hell then yes, like anything running outside of design spec it will eventually go wrong and it's not going to be cheap. Then again, replacing wishbone bushes and engines on S2000 is not exactly ALDI prices either.
My previous housemate ran one for almost 2 years and it was faultlessly reliable, that was a stock car with no modifications. It had been a garage queen, previous owner had replaced both turbos just before he bought it, anything that needed doing had been done. I would want one with a proper recorded history if i was to consider it.
The biggest expense for him was wrapping it around a signpost in Milton Keynes.

Having said that I still think the R34 is a better option than an R35 - With a modified engine equal performance, more robust engine, and with a hell of a lot more character.
Next fingers crossed options for me:
Corvette ZR1
997 GT3 RS
Lambo Gallardo
Exige Cup
All in 3 years as I'm having too much fun in the M3 at the mo

Mr CJ and I were discussing this thread and we agreed that if money was no option (for running costs alone!) then it would be an Aston.
Enjoy her you lucky lucky git

If I didn't have a youngster then I'd be in one.

MB,
996's are not too expensive if you do the work yourself. For instance front and rear disc and pads are 1200 quid from OPC. You can buy these items for 400 quid( 630 for Turbo)fit yourself saving 800 quid. Apparently it's an easy fit from any average mechanic.
I had two lower arms fitted a few months back for over 400 quid at an Indy as rubbers had perished , using my old arms with power flex bushes was same price so I just got new ones.
I went to xchurch tyres 2 weeks back for a GEO and the guy told me he fitted the powerflex bushes to a 911 week before for 30 quid, they cost 90 quid for 2 so 120 quid all in .
You can buy original parts and either fit them yourself or use a mechanic for a massive saving.
