When is it worth switching off the engine?
Something that has always puzzled me.
How long do you need to be sat stationary for it to be worthwhile turning the engine off? It must take a fair chunk of fuel to start it up again, but there is an optimum time delay to make it worth doing.
My gut feeling is that if I think I'm not going to move for more than a couple of minutes it's worth cutting the engine, but I might be way off the mark.
Stingy bast*rd?
Sad anal tw*t?
Any other suggestions?

You may not have a choice in future, the Guvearnmunt, (well, West Sussex County Council in actual fact), is looking at fining you if you don't.

Don't turn your engine off.
My daily commute takes me over the A69 to Newcastle and ther are some traffic light controlled roadworks at Haydon Bridge that take at least 5 minutes to change. Surely I could save a thimbleful of V-power by turning the engine off

Nothing will affect me!
Thanks Beardie, I have my answer:
The AA said: 'For less than a minute it is not fuel efficient to switch off because you will use more fuel starting up than you will save. It only becomes fuel efficient to switch off if you are going to be stopped for a minute or more.'
