Windscreen replacement
My beemer screen has a spreading crack from the centre outwards
Clearly not fixable, but it hasn't done bad - I can tell it's the original from the running in stickers on the inside
Now, I've heard too many horror stories about mobile fitters, and I don't like people coming to my house
So has anyone got a dealer to replace the screen, or tried to?
If so, what was the ins co's reaction
In the meantime, I'll try and find my documents.....

I think the cover is only given because the insurance co's get a cracking (pardon the pun) rate for the work, as opposed to a dealer. I'd be surprised if they would pay out for that.
I've had quite a few windscreens via insurance co's and the best one was by auto windscreens who came to my workplace. RAC windscreens were a bunch of f**king monkeys and I got them to put another windscreen on after the front clam was squint and the window poorly sealed. Quite an insult coming from someone who drives a car handbuilt by Norfolk turnip farmers!

Be interested in this as I recently got a large chip in the Elise's window
In terms of Dealers - I've not heard of anyone trying that approach, as I guess they would still outsource to the fitters, but have it done at their location?
If you have problems with people coming to your home, why not arrange the fitter to come to another location - from experience in the past they dont care where the vehicle is, so long as it is in a 'workable location' such as a car park or maybe even liaise with the dealer to use their premises?

I had an M3 reshelled at a main dealer once (the one I would use)
I actually watched them fit the screen themselves, so not sure they would automatically outsource it
But if it comes to having to use a mobile outfit, then yes, they can do it in a car park
Thinking about it, I did take another car to a depot type place where they do this work
They were a bunch of monkeys though - took three attempts to get it right
I've got at least half a dozen disputes going on at the moment, and I could do without another one takling up my time

Very much luck of the draw I guess.
I've seen half a dozen windscreens replaced in our (small) office car park in the last 6 months or so - all by Autoglass and all done to a very good standard.
The guys who came were really careful with the cars, didn't make a mess and were very quick to get the job done.
That said, I don't doubt for a moment that change location and you'll get a useless scrot.

Pete, as suggested above, your insurer will probably only cover the claim if the repair is carried out by their 'preferred' repairer.
You can get around one of your concerns by taking the car to their depot for repair (Autoglass etc. will almost certainly have a base within 20 or 30 min's of you).
As for the concern regarding the quality of the work - I had the screen of my wifes Stream replaced by Autoglass.........after 5 attempts (and 5 screens - as the screen is bonded to the car it has to be broken to remove it!) they did a passable job. Must have cost them a small fortune though.

If your beemer is of MOTable age I'd what until near the MOT date before changing the windscreen incase the same thing happens again. It would be gutting to replace the screen now then have to do it again to get it through the MOT!
