Definitely get networking certs, Cisco rules all others.
PC work is a dirt cheap commodity with no upward mobility.

I am trying to get a guy hired for our company in charlotte for $20/hour and that is a steal for us. Our bill rate is $225 minimum.

best part is that as you get more certs ie. CCxA ->CCxP ->CCIE your pay moves with you. the quicker you go, the quicker you accelerate your pay.

CCIEs can easily make $150k and up, but you will have to work your butt off to get there.

Don't work at Cisco, they are slave drivers now. maybe you can get into a development program, but be prepared to move with them. no more stock market millionaires being made over there.
Hi Dave,

I'm a CCNP/CCDP. You are right CCIE rules, but that is a difficult cert!

And yep, Cisco seems to chew 'em up and spit them out these days - my neighbor routinely works 80 hour weeks for them, and spends 4 months out of the year in China. I wonder why their turnover is so high???

Yet, Cisco, as an employer on your resume, is still a good draw.

Dave

I guess it depends on where and who you work for at cisco.

It probably has more to do with the fact that i'm a contractor, but damn people not even close to being associated with my team running around tattle-tailing on us, calling managers and mess is getting REALLLLLY fn annoying. I'm allowed to work from home damn it, dont go telling people i'm not in the office not doing my job when i'm only "in" the office for 4 hrs a day.

hsuis2cool- which building do you work in?

RTP12, yeah, the WFH issue can be touchy subject. I got a couple manager that doesn't like people WFH, it's like if they don't see you in the office, they don't think you are working.

I appreciate all the info. I guess I need to check on getting network certs. Standard going rate isn't much more than I'm making now. So, I guess it all depends how much they want to pay me. I'll just be the IT guy for 4 car dealerships, not for Cisco or any other tech company. What cert should I start out with?

yep, that is me. I assume you are the person that left me a S2KCA card on my windshield one day. Glad to see another S2K in Cisco

for PC hardware I would get Comptia A plus or network plus. Microsoft MCSE is also good. For any Cisco Certs, I think you need to start with CCNA.
