Just got back from a church retreat and found some killer roads above Winston-Salem. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in doing a day trip or weekend up there

Route and roads: http://maps.google.c...sp=4&sz=13&z=13

Exploring other roads is definitely encouraged as well.

Food: http://maps.google.c...h+Carolina&z=14

Might try something nice like this: http://www.triorestaurantandbar.com/ I took Kate to the one here in Raleigh and it was really good. Great wine as well. If we wanted to go cheaper too I'm always down for that.

Lodging: Microtel @ $60/night; Hampton Inn @ $109/night; or Holiday Inn Express @ $96.

Would love any feedback on this idea, positive or negative. My schedule is open and would like to do my best in be inclusive of everyone who could make it.

Trip time from Raleigh would be about 2.5 hours.
I like it. As you know, I am always ready for an adventue.

Thanks for the feedback, Lee There are a good number of tight corners with a decent amount of elevation change. I was really wishing I was in the S and not a church van

So a couple of preferential questions then:

1) Day trip (Saturday) or weekend?
2) If weekend, which hotel?
3) Cheaper food for our 1 dinner or a nice place?
4) Any interest in checking out the sites? (State Parks and wutnut)

Def some great roads - Golden Eagle used to lead drives up there and I used to do a weekly Saturday drive with a local car club from Greensboro. GE has a mapped route in the sticky: https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/306...5#entry5898115

I started to make a map but it got FUBAR'd at Meadows of Dan.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=...69332,0.616608

The rest of it is either going to Chateau Morrisette or taking a left at the BRP just south of Meadows of Dan, going a couple miles, then left on Orchard Gap and south to Mt. Airy.

We used to do Sat mornings and just drive around the Hanging Rock area, but a day trip is easy - Oak Ridge for brunch, lunch in VA like at Meadows or Chateau Morrisette (pinkies out), then dinner some place like Greensboro on the way back to Raleigh.

Love the roads up there!

I'm not aware of any race gas along the way, but maybe someone who is more familiar with the area could address that.

Matt, is this something that might interest you?
