Smile Tear in top

So, my warranty runs out this month, and I figured I'd go over the car and fix anything I could find while I'm still covered, and I found two tears in my top.

The fabric is completely ripped, with just the outer vinyl holding. Going in Monday to see if I can get it replaced under warranty.

I'm always amazed when people say they are going to get this sorta thing covered by their warranty.

Warranty covers something that has defect in workmanship.

The top is a "wearable" item...so how is that covered under any warranty??

My top was replaced at 30k miles because it was truly defective and had a tab portion that would not fold correctly causing it to leave a bulge whenever you put the top UP.

Anyways...I wonder why we haven't come up with a way to sorta "patch" these wear spots from within the top...sorta like those elbow patches...stop it before it ever becomes a problem.

I bought my car in 04 and the strap was loose causes the folding arm to poke through the top in a month owning the car... Warrenty replaced it... luckily...

Maybe you can explain what isn't a wearable item thats covered under warranty? Doesn't everything wear out over time? Warranties are for replacing things that wear out or break prematurely. A top that gets a rip in it due to defective design qualifies, which is why so many people get their tops replaced under warranties.

Gotta disagree, Raul.

This issue with the top is so frequent that it has to qualify as a design defect. Mine showed a rip on the inside after only 8 months. Nothing wrong with the top material -- and it wasn't wear in that short of time, either. That;s something just plain wrong -- defective. Hendrick (Easley, SC) replaced it under warranty.

If Honda doesn't want to pay a lot of warranty claims, they should issue a TSB to fix the cause.

Yeah...but a TSB would cost $$$ (you know that already)...so they figure they'll just handle them as they come in. Sucks.

Hey Saki, sorry man...re-reading my post...I came across a little harsh and of course, didn't mean to. I agree with you that it's a design issue.

And on a serious note, why hasn't Honda simply developed something like those elbow patches to go on the inside of the top to prevent the issue??

but then that would cost $$$ Seriously, it seems like a fix like you suggest would cost a lot less than all the top replacements.

Saki, hope they replace your top without a lot of hassles
