Seriously, that thing looks like just the ticket for you. I see they're going to enter our market in '06. I may have to pick one up for local commuting.
My fiance had prepared a case study for her MBA class on the Smart Car... you CAN order these in the US now but I would doubt that there will be a large market for these cars in the states. It will always be a 'third' family car or a serious commuter car.

As for hybrids: "I will never drive an electric car until one does a big burn-out infront of my house."

Seriously - Cool stuff. Does it have the normal saftey features too (ABS / Airbag)?

Yes. . .with, perhaps, say a MARSUPIAL!

Diego, sounds like you made the right choice. I wish we had those little rides here in the US. A great 2nd car for sure. I am still eyeing the Element. Do they offer those in AussieLand?

They don't offer the Element here. They offer the HRV which is like a CRV with the roof lowered about 1/2 foot and a little more boxy.

I guess they figure that if you want to haul stuff you can buy one of the miriad of 'mini tradesvans' they sell here. Those are cars in the 1.6- 2.0 liter class wiht a big van like rear end. They look really funny though.
