Uh oh...
Well, I think I need spark plugs. I noticed today that under acceleration in any gear from time to time I'm getting what I'd call a sputter. I say it's what i'd call because I've never really had this problem.
Here's an example: In first gear at a stop sign turning left. I'll start accelerating and somewhere during the turn i'm pushing on the gas but the car holds back a bit and the engine makes that sputtering sound, then it suddenly catches again and I jet off into the sun.
Another: I'm in fourth gear cruising down the street at a steady speed. I press a little on the pedal and she does the same thing, I backoff and it rights itself again.
So from what I've deduced I believe I need spark plugs but I can't be sure.
Some other info:
79000 miles
2001 ap1
oil change 1000 miles or so ago.
Haven't changed the plugs or air filter since I bought her in October, and I don't know when they were last changed.
Hope someone can help!

Hey Hunter, I am not saying you shouldn't change your spark plugs or the air filter but you might also want to do the "MAP Whack". Sometimes it will make the car do some funky things. Here is a good DIY on it http://forums.s2kca.com/showthread.php?t=19607.
Oh here is a good write up on the spark plug change as well http://forums.s2kca.com/showthread.php?t=16279.
Good luck.

How long are spark plugs good for, and how do you know it's time for a change?
I did the MAP Whack to my car, and zip-tied it, and the problem I had is still there. Also, how do you know when the MAP needs to be replaced?
I would imagine for both parts, you would get a CEL with the code pointing to these parts?
I'm still troubleshooting on my end to find the problem to my elusive solution- compression test and fuse checks are next.

I had a similar issue...in all gears...under hard acceleration...a couple of years ago. I finally did the MAP whack (actually many whacks)...and I haven't had the problem since.

Spark plugs are supossed to go 100K. But our cars are getting up there in years and miles. I am planning on doing mine sometime this summer.
