Why is it that flammable and inflammable mean essentially the same thing? This one's been bothering me for years.

And yes I posted this in the Unkie Trunkie thread too - I'm just looking for a definitive answer and hedging my bet. Given two oracles it's best to consult both.

Inflammable was first used centuries ago, meaning "of flame" basically, such as "indeed" would mean "of merit", the prefix IN having the dubious meaning of "of" , "in" or "within". So combustible things were inflammable.
"Flammable" came in the picture twice over. It originally was to differ what materials could be set on fire as opposed to being considered chemically combustible such as kerosene. But wait, wood is both combustible AND can be set on fire -- so who needs that confusion, right.
