Are you using the super tight shorts, or the mountain bike style?

I feel a little bit uncomfortable JUST wearing the spandex-style shorts by themselves. Maybe use them as an "under layer" and than basketball shorts over?
Don't be a pussy. For long rides (more than an hour), anything other than stretch shorts will leave you a chafed mess. Layering is counterproductive. If you're totally embarrassed to be seen in tights, try the MTB style shorts, but unless you're just the right shape (read: skinny) they still leave something to be desired.

The latter.

It's also possible they made two trips - once in the mid-morning, and another later in the day.

The metals tend to run not entirely cheap. . . but aside from the bell manufacture and the hole punch, the tuning and polishing have to be done by hand.

What are they made of? I always just assumed it was stamped brass, which isn't that expensive...

The alloy and brass mixtures are different to every company, and are fairly closely-guarded secrets.
