You have to say a rosary to every time you self-fail.

8d,
changing strings, adjusting truss rod, adjusting action... these things, while i'm not a professional, i can do fairly well.

is there anything else from a maintenance perspective that i should be doing for my ol' squire?

Use it for kindling.

Seriously though, remember to pencil the nut (heh heh m heh), clean the neck, and then, if you're feeling adventurous, checking the wiring.

do you use any kind of oil or anything on your strings?

what is penciling the nut, besides dirty sounding?

using it for kindling would only happen if i bought a new one, and i bought wheels instead.

No. I've used finger-ease a couple of times, that's about it. It's okay. . . practically a must though if you play more than an hour a day.

You need to get a little graphite into the divots in the nut before you re-string it.
