Remember that in Hi-Fi, less is more. If you want fancy bells and whistles, go down the home theater path, and expect to start paying bigger bucks before you get really clean noise floors.
NAD and Jolida are my two main recommendations. Any of the BEE designs from NAD swing way above their price point, and the NAD is really future-ready/future-proof with pre-out/power-in ports.
Cambridge Audio has products at the ~$500 point, and for a little more, the Rega Brio comes in at ~$700.
Personally, seek out either the NAD BEE series, or a Jolida 1701RC.
FYI, for a small room, 30-40 watts is enough (with good speakers).
