I am on the fence with this one....Apple spins disinformation better than our Republican administration ...they want they cake and pie and want everyone else to shut their collective pieholes except when it goes in their favor!

it wouldn't hurt to try and update the firmware/format the thing with the ipod updater. Even if the HDD died, the firmware should still respond.
At this point thats not a bad idea. It you can update the firmware you it may be the hdd, if not the "motherboard" or there is no power(doesnt mean bad batterys).
Good luck man.

by the way, if you have to buy a new one you might as well open it up and try different things.

And Apple risks appearing "big brother"-ish in this lawsuit:

a)what did these people "leak"?
b)you realize that any other technology oriented firm would be doing the same thing, right? M$ would probably be demanding the first born child of the employees in question

give me a break dude, they're not reporters, they're freaking 19 year old bloggers! There are laws that the bloggers broke by taking information that they could reasonably believe to be confidential. Not just a civil contract violation on the part of the employee, but a violation of california trade laws.
I haven't seen what the "confidential product information" was but I don't think it was source code or anything technical.

This is Apple, not MS. If they want to maintain their image of being different than MS and others, then they shouldn't respond in the same manner.

a business is a business. Someone leaks your confidential information, whether it's source code or product launch dates (both of which can affect share prices) it is every company's perrogative to prosecute leaks to the full extent of the law. It's not about having a different product, or marketing, it's about protecting those differences. And it's not like this was a one time thing either, this guy makes a lot of money from disseminating trade secrets.

But, if they really want to change the world, they should open source their stuff.

By no means do I disagree with you. I'm really just pointing out that Apple is just like any other company. In fact, it can be argued that they have been greedier than the much hated MS.
