Are the ipod software updates tied to the iTunes software on the Windows platform? I thought they were....
I don't know. As an iPod owner I should though.

His iPod HDD died. I don't think software updates will do much good.
I have to agree I was thinking this when Mike asked the Q... that's why I asked what difference it would make.

If my harddrive goes on my PC it won't help to upgrade my OS.

The only reason I asked this ...was one of our employees daughters had the same kind of thing go down Applecare was adamant about her updating the software FIRST before they would take it in for service!

Upshot was she had the Applecare warranty and exchanged it free of charge.

it wouldn't hurt to try and update the firmware/format the thing with the ipod updater. Even if the HDD died, the firmware should still respond.

You are telling me (and UnaB's link too) that the OS and app resides on a chip and not the HD. I was never sure of this.

I now wonder if the Creative Zen Nomad is the same. this would greatly simplify the replacement of an HD in that player.

Have you looked at the Apple forums? Someone might have something to say that could help.
I have been on the iPod Lounge and can't find anything there to help. The thing really just won't do anything !!!!!

Do you have the latest iTunes software on your computer?
Yes. I downloaded the most up to date software, and also the most up to date iPod manager software as well, just to make sure I had done everything I could think of myself.

James, I have the same complaints about laptops. Just about the same service life at Casa Chazmo. Never again.
