Applecare was adamant about her updating the software FIRST before they would take it in for service! Upshot was she had the Applecare warranty and exchanged it free of charge.

You are telling me (and UnaB's link too) that the OS and app resides on a chip and not the HD. I was never sure of this.
I now wonder if the Creative Zen Nomad is the same. this would greatly simplify the replacement of an HD in that player.
