Really liked them when they first came out.

Today, I'd probably choose the 510 over the SE-R

It's a toss-up.

Wait, you'd rather have a Datsun from around '70 vs. a Nissan (Datsun) from the '90s? AH I see... so we're not talking *reason*. K well I'd suggest a Fiat Spyder from the 70's or a '60's Alfa Spyder.

My son was looking for a car a year ago in the $5k range. He found a bunch of beauties including a couple of Fiat Spyders. I loved his choices but told him, "Son, *I* can't afford the upkeep of a Fiat Spyder, how will you?"

He bought a CL

You've known me for how many years and you're just noticing that I've got an ever so slightly warped "practicality" gene?!

A 70's Datsun is still relatively reliable and has lots of character. I'm not looking for something horribly unreliable, but I'm willing to sacrifice some element of practicality for something that is fun and/or has soul...

If I were going for a small convertible of that nature...I'd stick with a Miata. I'm looking for something different. I'm sure I'll get another Miata sometime...but I'd start with a different one and build it differently...

And, for the record, I wouldn't buy a CL...

Given the current condition of my car, I'd likely rather start with a better base Miata and adding a turbo than souping up my current one.
I see what about... The upcoming FT86 from Toyota

Seems like it will be a decent starting platform

The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to suggest a GTI as Brant's next car. Easily chipped/boosted, tons of room, and reliable.
