Unless its a displaced fracture, a surgery isn't needed. A new bone will start forming where the fracture is and it'll be stronger than before. Put a figure 8 brace on and try not to use your arm/shoulder for a few weeks. Vicodin(if u have any) or motrin as needed for pain. Good luck!

Looking at the X-rays, it looks to me like the bone pieces don't line up at the break. My surgeon wants to give it a month. We'll see.

A pic of the X-rays would help. In most cases, a surgery is only needed if the bone is fractured on multiple locations. If its just one location, it heals up just fine without surgery. You might end up with a slight lump where the fracture was, but strength and range of motion usually returns back to normal. Were u given a figure 8 splint to wear?

No. The separation wasn't as severe as this:

That's a displaced fracture, but its just at one location. To prevent surgery, you will need to wear a figure 8 brace which will keep your clavicle pulled back so the bones grow in an aligned position. Also, limit the movement and do not raise your arm at all. That's what a figure 8 brace looks like.

My surgeon mentioned a brace, but said "I'm not going to recommend one." BTW, who are you? You're new to the board, but seem to know what you're talking about.

I've known my orthopedic for 33 years and really trust him. He was one of the pioneers of arthroscopic surgery. He scoped my left knee three times and my left shoulder (the one I just hurt) twice. He did a hip replacement two years ago. I wonder why he didn't recommend a brace or sling.
