I just got an iPod
Out of the box iPod cannot be used as a HD. Open up iPod prefs in iTunes and check one box and it is. Once checked it can be seen by Windows Explorer as a drive. Simple. (In XP or Win2000)
I use maxi rip since I'm determined not to use CD's at all any more. I still like to buy them for many reasons... liner notes, disaster recovery etc.

...oh and any MP3 dragged into the iPod as a file (i.e. to the iPod HD directly) cannot be seen or played by the iPod player. text files OTOH can be seen if dropped into the "Notes" folder of iPod. Similarly vCards and vCals can be dropped into the "Contacts" or "Calendar" folders and seen in iPod. Cool but not quick to use.
To get it working, simply go into iTunes (with iPod attached) > click on "Display iPod Options" button in lower right ONLY when iPod is connected AND when you select "iPod" from Source on left tray. Then check "Enable Disk Use".
This will bring stock up (among other things). I read they are already talking with Playboy.
