I'm at the Apple store in Palo Alto...

not to mean that the gay penguin is any better than the apple, just that you have a choice.

if you don't need the capacity, or your library is smaller and you don't need good music management software, then by all means go with something less expensive.
I've been staring at computers for 15 years, I can handle a slightly more complex GUI than the iPod's. Ogg vorbis isn't a big deal, but it's nice to know it's there. I have a fair amount of stuff in WMA, so that's important to me.
FM tuner is nice; there are times when I get sick of everything I have and just want to listen to some manufactured pop singer. Also, it'd be a multi purpose device for me - I'd use it at the gym, where the TV sound is broadcast on low-power FM signals.
I don't want to come off as the iPod is junk. They're very good but at a premium price. They're the Kleenex of tissues; when you say you want an mp3 player, most people will assume you're talking about the iPod, but there are alternatives that are equal or better at a lower cost. Of course there's also a bunch of alternatives that are shit.
i try to avoid crashes
actually though, the mounting bracket is attached to the bike via a steel cable tie (one of the screw-down types) and the ipod is connected to the bracket via three contact points. I did break one of the contacts, so the redundancy is muy good. replacement bracket is just $20. I could make you a good kit for whatever unit you decide to get, I am much happier w/ speakers than headphones, I can hear what's going on around me AND nothing clamped on my head or poking in my ears.

I have 4 bikes and I want the flexibility...
One day I may get a cruiser and do a "Josh" copy-cat job on my bike. For now I like my bike simple and light.
