Three lawsuits filed over U.S. Grand Prix
Tue 21 Jun, 6:12 PM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Three lawsuits have been filed by Formula One fans seething over the decision to stage the U.S. Grand Prix with only six cars.

A class-action lawsuit was filed in Indianapolis on behalf of Larry Bowers, who wants a refund for his five tickets and travel expenses from his home in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the Indianapolis Star reported on Tuesday.

The suit, like two others filed on Monday in Marion Superior Court, holds Formula One, the sport's governing body FIA and the Michelin tyre company responsible for not holding the type of event that was advertised.

Fourteen teams, including championship leaders Renault and McLaren, decided not to race on Sunday after Michelin expressed concerns that the Indianapolis track could not handle its tyres.

World champion Michael Schumacher of Ferrari won the 73-lap race before 120,000 fans, many of whom tossed cans and bottles on to the track in disgust.

All of the six teams participating used Bridgestone tyres. Rather than sit out the race, the Michelin teams should have raced at reduced speeds, the FIA said.

The boycotting teams will appear before the FIA's World Motor Sport Council in Paris on June 29.

Also named in the lawsuits were the boycotting teams and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the newspaper reported.

Bowers, reached Tuesday at his Colorado Springs home, would not discuss the lawsuit and his lawyer, William Bock, was unavailable for comment.

Mosley calls on Michelin teams to refund Indy fans
Tue 21 Jun, 4:52 PM

Speaking to the BBC, Mosley said: "Between the teams and Michelin, they owe the fans the money.

"Morally, there's no question in my mind, they deprived the fans of something. They owe the fans money and they owe the fans compensation for wasted time."

The question of compensation is likely to loom large at next Wednesday's hearing, in which the seven teams will face charges from the FIA that they brought the sport into disrepute.

Mosley also hit backs at claims he should consider his own position following the farce at Indy when just six cars raced in the U.S. GP.

"If something was my fault I'd be first to consider my position, not because a tyre company can't supply the right tyres or the teams won't compromise by running a little bit more slowly through a fast corner.

"I'd be first to accept blame if it was over something I had control but I don't. If I was in charge of the tyres or the teams, it wouldn't have happened."

"It seems that the Michelin teams failed to bring a back-up tyre as usual with them to Indianapolis. As a result they had a performance problem and asked for the circuit to be changed to overcome their difficulty.

"The FIA offered them options to compete safely within the limitations of their tyres."

Paul Stoddart has already called on Mosley to be ousted from office.

"Max Mosley categorically forbid the introduction of that chicane, and he's going to have some serious questions to answer as to why he actually took that decision," the Minardi boss told the BBC.

"I have heard many, many calls for Mosley's resignation. I would echo that.

"I don't think there is any credible explanation for what went on. I think the president of the FIA has to have a very close look at his position, because many people think his position is untenable."

Mansell brands US GP 'sick joke'.
Tue 21 Jun, 10:42 AM

Nigel Mansell has said that the US Grand Prix farce could well spell the end of F1 in America.

The former world champion told British tabloid newspaper, The Daily Mail that he was 'disgusted', 'saddened' and 'angry' that such a 'race' could be allowed to happened.

"It was, frankly, a sick joke and although I am long retired and was 4,000 miles away, I felt humiliated and embarrassed by what went on. It was like watching someone commit suicide in public," he told the 'paper.

"You cannot blame Michelin. I thought it was very brave of them to declare their concern over the integrity of their product and advise the teams.

"You cannot really blame the teams, who had to react to the advice they were given and not risk the safety of their drivers.

"When the safety of drivers and, possibly, supporters comes into question, you don't mess about. You do whatever is necessary in order to race. A compromise had to be found. And that compromise was a chicane being installed at that final fast corner. Simple and effective. It has been done before. It could have been done again overnight on Saturday and the race could have gone ahead and the public been entertained."

"I don't want to get involved in the politics of F1, but it strikes me as an incredibly sad reflection on the state of the sport that, for whatever reason, a satisfactory deal could not be not achieved in a such a generous timescale," he continued.

"Instead, we have surely seen the end of F1 in the United States. This was a worldwide sporting spectacle at one of the foremost motor racing venues in the world. I drove in the States in 1993 and know their fans' attitude; they expect entertainment and value for money.

"My heart goes out to all those thousands of F1 fans who travelled from across America - not to mention those who came from overseas. They will not want anything more to do with F1."

FIA's letter to the Michelin seven
Tue 21 Jun, 12:05 PM

'Dear Sir,

Article 151c of the International Sporting Code

You are hereby requested to appear at the forthcoming meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council which is to be held in Paris on 29 June 2005 (FIA 8 place de la Concorde, 75008 Paris, meeting room "Salle du Comite" at 09:30 hrs to answer charges that, in breach of the above, you committed one or more acts prejudicial to the interests of a competition, namely the 2005 United States Grand Prix and/or to the interests of motor sport generally in that you

131) The starting grid will be published four hours before the race. Any competitor whose car(s) is (are) unable to start for any reason whatsoever (or who has good reason to believe that their car(s) will not be ready to start) must inform the stewards accordingly at the earliest opportunity and, in any event, no later than 45 2005 F1 Sporting Regulations 21 / 35 25 May 2005 minutes before the start of the race. If one or more cars are withdrawn the grid will be closed up accordingly. The final starting grid will be published 45 minutes before the start of the race.
I don't see how they can use that. The cars were on the grid and started the race but didn't finish.

151. Breach of rules Any of the following offences specifically referred to previously, of these rules :
a) All bribery or attempt, person having official duties being employed in any competition and the acceptance bribe by such an official
b) Any action having as in a competition of an therefor.
c) Any fraudulent conduct interests of any competition sport generally.
Since none of the previous 150 rules were broken, I don't see how they can use 151c. Regardless, the FIA is more guilty of that by refusing to make necessary changes in the sake of sport.

No one commenting on the illustrious Le Mans 24hr win by Champion Racing with their Audi R8's in LMP1, or the thunderous Corvettes winning GT1.

Brilliant weekend, I drank far too much beer.
