The Semi-Official Hockey Thread...
I honestly think this may kill the NHL as a premier sport. It was already struggling against NASCAR and golf for claiming #4. I don't know how many people will be eager to resume paying $30-100/game, at least not for a while. And with the NHL so ticket-revenue reliant, a lot of teams could be in trouble if the fans don't come back right away. Of course, folding 3 or 4 teams may actually be good for the league as a whole.

Yeah, get rid of those Canadian franchises which are dragging down the league.

Seriously though, we need to look at ditching some of the American teams that are located in hot climates. Nobody gives a rat's ass about hockey in Florida, Tampa Bay, Phoenix, Nashville, etc, unless they are doing well. Even then, Tampa Bay wasn't selling out the arena during the playoff run, until the finals. Compare this to many of the Canadian teams who are constantly sold out for regular season games... ie. Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal. Vancouver hasn't had a night that wasn't sold old in something like 3 years!!
First of all, you always hear people saying that the league has too many teams right now, and the talent pool is getting stretched a little thin. I'm not sure I agree with that. We need to look at closing down a few franchises for starters. But we should also consider tranferring a few to better hockey locales, in order to save the franchise. When Minnesota got a team back, they managed to sell out the arena every night... why? Because people in Minnesota live for hockey, people in Nashville do not! Why not move some of these non-producing franchises back up to Canada, or the Northern US (ie. the Snow Belt). I would love to see the Winnipeg Jets, and the Quebec Nordiques back in action, as well as the Hartford Whalers
. I'd love to see Seattle get a team! I'd love to see the league be able to sustain itself with 30 teams... if they were in the right locales.
Clifs Notes:
NP is a BASTARD!
US hot climate teams = empty arenas
Canadian teams = sold out arenas
Move franchises instead of eliminating them
Snow belt locations are good
Of course, "NP is a bastard" is the most meaningful statement of the post.
