I'm usually not one to give advice but perhaps expressing empathy towards the people left behind who are hurting would be easier?
I'm noting that's the route I took. My stepmom is a very caring person and I know it'll be hard for her to get thru burying her brother even though he was a worthless waste of oxygen and didn't deserve to live as long as he did.
After going thru my mom's funeral and then her parents shortly after, I realized there's just nothing to say that means much. "I'm sorry"? "My condolences"? "My thoughts (and prayers) are with you"? ****ing yay, still dead.

I'm telling Mike that this was a free lunch from one of our banks.....it doesn't cost me anything to send them business. I make the finance reserve and get paid on it but it doesn't cost me anything....and they bring us Cheesecake Factory and say thank you.
