I'm noting that my initial reaction was that I felt awful about it...I started crying as soon as it happened. I'm over that though.

i'm suggesting that the next time you're about to make some roadkill, and it's not realistically avoidable, drop it 2 gears and nail the loud pedal. i'm figuring the faster you're going, the less the poor animal is going to feel it.

i'm realizing though, that if you have enough time to downshift and floor it, then you should have time to stop or safely swerve

I'm pretty sure it didn't suffer. I mean not for more than a few seconds. Was going 110km/hr. Not only was there no time to avoid it, there was barely time for a brief gasp from me. The last thing I'd want is for it to suffer, as much as I'm concerned about the car.

i'm thinking if i'm going 50mph on an empty road, with 2+ lanes on either side of me, and there's an animal or other debris in my path, i'm going to swerve...

i'm noting that i was once on a 2-lane road doing 80mph (posted 70) and a HUGE armadillo appeared outta nowhere (damn these Honda HIDs!). i had to swerve... got full-lock sideways as i slid with 3 tires in the wet grass, then another full-lock slide as i tried to save it again when it hooked... close call, but the armadillo and i are alive
